SemutaMusic...
The name itself conjures for me memories of long overnight
transmissions from the studio, filling the airwaves with
the latest ambientechno releases or time-tested classics.
Often the next show's host wouldn't show up, and in that
case we were expected to either cover the shift or shut
down the station's transmitter, and the latter option
always seemed like a drag to me. I think a radio station
should always be on the air, 24 hours a day, every day of
the week. And in extreme cases when you're stuck in the
studio and running on empty because you've been up for
nearly 24 hours, that means putting on a 45-minute gamelan
piece and taking a quick power nap. Many listeners also
wondered what the name meant. It originates from Frank
Herbert's Dune novels, here is the definition:
Semuta
(n): The second narcotic derivative (by crystal extraction)
from burned residue of elacca wood. The effect (described
as timeless, sustained ecstasy) is elicited by certain
atonal vibrations referred to as semuta music. NOTE -
SemutaMusic and its affiliates do not condone the use of
non-existent and/or possibly illicit substances to achieve
sonic-spiritual states of ecstasy.
The following served as a general blueprint to how this
particular series was handled in 2001:
SemutaMusic's focus was to bring a broad assortment of
electronic music to the Chicago area airwaves, and
worldwide via live netcasts. Aside from the regular shows,
this year we featured some great live acts, including
exclusive performances by Burning Rome, WWJD?, Vir Unis
& James Johnson, as well as interviews with relevant
artists and a host of representative guest selectors and
DJs from Chicago and further afield. SemutaMusic broadcast
many exclusives and unreleased tunes that often came direct
from the artists, and rarely aired the same tracks twice.
Exceptions were allowed in the cases of caller requests and
the occasional new release which warranted additional
exposure during the opening weeks. In this manner,
SemutaMusic transmissions maximize playlist diversity and
encourage new musical combinations during the broadcasts.
Thanks to all those people involved, you made it the best
year yet!
